ODE TO A TREE
Have you ever mourned the loss of a tree? These photos were taken in early September 2021, the day we spent with this beautiful 300-year-old tree. It's in a place in the North East of England called The Sycamore Gap and stands dramatically in a dip in Hadrian’s Wall in the Northumberland National Park. It was a very moving experience to see it in person, so we were distraught to find out (via the NYT) that this past Wednesday night, during a storm, it was murdered, felled with a chainsaw in what is being called a deliberate act of vandalism. The tree was iconic, famous around the country, and even starred alongside Kevin Costner in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. These photos and our memories of that perfect day are all we have left of this once magnificent tree that has stood through all the changing seasons for centuries.
